Elon Musk Says Gray Kittens Are Grounding Tesla Robotaxis At Night
Tesla Robotaxi in Austin adds one more operating hour as Elon Musk cites low-contrast pets on dark pavement as the key remaining night obstacle.
Tesla's Robotaxi service in Austin now runs an hour later, closing at 11 p.m. instead of 10 p.m. Elon Musk announced the change on X on October 3. In the same breath, he admitted why the fleet hasn't gone fully nocturnal yet.
The holdup isn't weather or traffic. It's pets, specifically the ones cameras struggle to spot once the sun goes down and contrast disappears into the asphalt.
Nighttime Visibility Is The Main Limit

Musk stated the issue bluntly: "The main thing we are trying to solve is making sure that we do not run over pets when they are hard to see at night. Literally trying to avoid grey kittens on grey tarmac in the dark," he wrote.
Cameras need light and contrast to separate an object from its background. A gray animal against gray pavement under weak streetlighting gives a vision system almost nothing to work with. Tesla's own vehicle manuals reportedly warn that dim or poorly lit roads can degrade what the cameras capture.
Musk has pushed back against the idea that LiDAR would fix this. He called it "a fool's errand" back in 2019, insisting "anyone relying on lidar is doomed." This week he relied on a different claim instead: "Cameras in the visible spectrum can see very well in the dark when the AI is doing the photon count." That line describes what he thinks the software could achieve under ideal conditions rather than how the Austin fleet is actually running now.
Waymo took the opposite bet. Its sixth-generation system pairs 13 cameras with four LiDAR units and six radars across a commercial fleet that now exceeds 4,000 driverless vehicles. Google's Dmitri Dolgov has argued that "camera vision setups have a safety curve that flattens out way too early," meaning systems that depend only on cameras stop getting safer, even as you add more miles, data, and training.
Rivian, meanwhile, says the sensor now costs just "a few hundred dollars" per vehicle, undercutting Musk's old argument that LiDAR is economically dead weight.
Tesla's Austin Service Now Runs Until 11 P.M.
Elon Musk With Tesla Cybercab At Night
The Austin Robotaxi launch dates back to June 2025, when limited service first accepted invited rides between 6 a.m. and midnight. Hours were later trimmed to a 10 p.m. cutoff across Tesla's live markets before this week's local bump to 11.
That still falls short of the full overnight coverage Musk has discussed.
The extension lands as Tesla's driverless ambitions face scrutiny on two fronts. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating 3.2 million Tesla vehicles over Full Self-Driving crashes tied to poor visibility conditions, a probe that overlaps directly with the pet-detection problem Musk described.
A second inquiry concerns whether the Cybercab's deployment is even legal, since the vehicle has no steering wheel or pedals for a human to take over. That question sits alongside an unrelated but recent stumble with a bollard crash in Austin that drew attention to how the fleet handles stationary obstacles, not just moving ones.
Whether Tesla restores full midnight-to-6-a.m. coverage depends on solving the exact failure mode Musk named this week. Until low-contrast animals on dark pavement stop being a blind spot, the extra hour appears to be the limit of what the company is willing to risk.
