Chevy's Clever Silverado Tailgate Will Be Harder To Get In 2027
For 2027, Chevrolet is limiting the Multi-Flex tailgate to just three Silverado 1500 trims.
Just a few years ago, funky tailgates were all the rage. Ford introduced the Pro Access tailgate, Ram rolled out its Multifunction tailgate, and Chevrolet launched the Multi-Flex. All three remain available today, but some are getting harder to find.
Chevrolet is reportedly reducing availability of the Multi-Flex tailgate for the 2027 model year, according to GM Authority. The clever tailgate will now be offered on just three Silverado 1500 trims: Trail Boss, High Country, and ZR2.
It will also cost more when it isn't included as standard equipment.
The Multi-Flex Tailgate Gets More Expensive
Chevrolet Silverado Multi-Flex Tailgate
In 2026, Chevrolet offered the Multi-Flex tailgate across most of the Silverado 1500 lineup. On eligible trims, it cost $445, while the ZR2 included it as standard equipment.
For 2027, the price increases to $595 on the Trail Boss and High Country. That's a $150 increase over the previous model year. The ZR2 continues to include the Multi-Flex tailgate as standard.
It's worth noting that Chevrolet significantly reworked the Silverado lineup for 2027, which could help explain the reduced availability. The new lineup consists of seven trims: Work Truck, Custom, Silverado, Custom Trail Boss, Trail Boss, ZR2, and High Country.
What Makes The Multi-Flex Tailgate So Special?
Unlike some of the increasingly elaborate features found on modern trucks, the Multi-Flex tailgate is actually pretty nifty. It can function as a conventional tailgate, act as a load stop for longer cargo, provide easier access to the bed, or transform into a work surface.
The inner portion of the tailgate can also fold down into a full-width step, making it easier to climb into the bed. Chevrolet says the step can support up to 375 pounds.
More Silverado Changes For 2027
The reduced availability of the Multi-Flex tailgate is just one of several changes coming to the 2027 Silverado 1500.
Chevrolet completely redesigned the truck for the new model year, bringing a new exterior, a heavily revised interior, larger displays, and a new generation of small-block V8 engines. The lineup also retains the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel and an updated 2.7-liter TurboMax four-cylinder.
The new Silverado also gets a 16.3-inch center display and a 12.2-inch digital instrument cluster as standard. Higher trims can add an 11.5-inch screen for the front passenger, while Super Cruise with trailer capability remains available.
So there's plenty that's new for 2027. But when it comes to the Multi-Flex tailgate, Chevrolet is actually giving Silverado buyers fewer choices.
