Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Land Rover y Porsche fueron las marcas ganadores de los World Car Awards 2021, el premio más importante de la industria automotriz mundial. En la elección participaron 93 periodistas de 29 países. Por primera vez, la Argentina contó con un jurado: Carlos Cristófalo, editor de Autoblog.
Los ganadores de cada categoría fueron los siguientes:
* World Car of the Year: Volkswagen ID.4, la SUV eléctrica de la marca alemana para el Segmento C (compacto). En la final se impuso frente a los Toyota Yaris y Honda E.
* World Luxury Car of the Year: Mercedes-Benz Clase S, la nueva generación del sedán de la marca alemana para el Semento F (limousine). En la final se impuso frente a los Polestar 2 y Land Rover Defender.
* World Performance Car of the Year: Porsche 911 Turbo, la nueva generación del clásico deportivo de la marca alemana. En la final se impuso frente a los Toyota GR Yaris y Audi RS Q8.
* World Urban Car of the Year: Honda E, el nuevo auto eléctrico de la marca japonesa para el Segmento A (citycar). En la final se impuso frente a los Toyota Yaris y Honda Jazz/Fit.
* World Car Design of the Year: Land Rover Defender, la nueva generación del todo terreno de la marca británica para el Segmento D (mediano). En la final se impuso frente a los Honda E y Mazda MX30.
De los autos ganadores de esta edición hay uno ya a la venta en Argentina (Porsche 911 Turbo, ver nota), uno confirmado para este año (Land Rover Defender, ver nota) y dos previstos para nuestro mercado, pero aún sin fecha de lanzamiento oficial (Clase S y VW ID.4). En cambio, Honda no tiene planes de traer el E a nuestro país.

The Road to the 2021 World Car Awards journey concluded today with the declaration of the Volkswagen ID.4 as the 2021 World Car of the Year as voted by our 93 distinguished international journalists from 28 countries that make up the World Car Awards jury panel. The votes were tabulated by KPMG.
This is the fifth World Car of the Year (WCOTY) win for Volkswagen AG. Previous WCOTY wins were as follows:
2013 World Car of the Year - Volkswagen Golf
2012 World Car of the Year - Volkswagen UP!
2010 World Car of the Year - Volkswagen Polo
2009 World Car of the Year - Volkswagen Golf VI

This year’s winner was chosen from an initial entry list of 24 vehicles from all over the world, then a short list of three finalists as announced on March 30, 2021. The Top Three in the World finalists for 2021 are the Honda e, the Toyota Yaris and the Volkswagen ID.4.
Vehicles eligible for the World Car of the Year award must be produced in volumes of at least 10,000 units/year, must be priced below the luxury-car level in their primary markets, and must be “on-sale” in at least two major markets, on at least two separate continents, between May 1, 2020 and May 1, 2021.

This is the sixth World Car Design of the Year win for Jaguar Land Rover. No other OEM has received as many Design awards in the World Car Awards’ 17 year history. Previous Design awards were: 2019 – Jaguar I-PACE, 2018 - Range Rover Velar, 2017 – Jaguar F-PACE, 2012 – Range Rover Evoque and 2013 – Jaguar F-Type.
Prof. Gerry McGovern OBE, Chief Creative Officer, Jaguar Land Rover, said: “New Defender is influenced by its past but is not constrained by it and we are delighted it has been honoured with this award. Our vision was to create a 21st century Defender by pushing the boundaries of engineering, technology and design while retaining its renowned DNA and off-road capability. The result is a compelling 4x4 that resonates with customers on an emotional level.”
The World Car Design of the Year category, and the corresponding award, are meant to highlight new vehicles with innovation and style that push established boundaries. This year, the cars eligible for the 2021 World Car Design of the Year award encompassed all the contenders competing in the other four award categories.
A design panel consisting of seven highly respected world design experts was asked to first review each candidate, and then establish a short-list of recommendations for the jurors’ final vote. The design experts are in alpha order: Gernot Bracht (Germany – Pforzheim Design School), Ian Callum (United Kingdom – Director of Design, CALLUM), Gert Hildebrand (Germany – Owner Hildebrand-Design), Patrick le Quément (France - Designer and President of the Strategy Committee - The Sustainable Design School), Tom Matano (USA – Academy of Art University, Former Head of Design – Mazda), Victor Nacif (USA - Chief Creative Officer, Brojure.com and Design instructor, NewSchool of Architecture and Design) and Shiro Nakamura (Japan - CEO, Shiro Nakamura Design Associates Inc.).
